IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO READ: As we enter our tenth year of offering these workshops, Annabel & I have decided that our final workshop for Trauma Sensitive Yoga Australia will be held in Brisbane over February 25 to 27, 2022. Since our first workshop in 2012, we have been inspired by the curiosity and interest from both the yoga teacher and mental health clinical community in working safely and effectively with clients who are in trauma recovery. Since commencing Trauma Sensitive Yoga Australia it has been heartwarming to see the growth and diversity of training programs that are now available to the health community which can only enhance and improve the quality of care and support for those dealing with the impacts of trauma . We'd like to acknowledge the pioneers in the trauma field- Judith Herman, Babette Rothschild, Pat Ogden, Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Dave Emmerson, Amy Weintraub, Bo Forbes and Deb Dana - all who have inspired our work and we hope the work of many in the field today. Thank you to all of those wonderful yoga teachers and mental health clinicians who have attended our workshops over the years. Annabel and I have so enjoyed working with you all. We have learnt so much from all of you and being part of this growing group of trauma informed health professionals has been truly inspiring. If you have wanted to attend our program then we hope to get to meet you at our upcoming Sydney workshop in November or our final workshop in Brisbane in February 2022.
FACILITATORS FOR BOTH DAYS: Annabel McLiskyis a psychologist in private practice in Bangalow, Northern New South Wales, and has been teaching yoga since 1978. She is an IYTA teacher and Senior Tutor in Dru Yoga and Dru Meditation Teacher Training courses around Australia. Annabel is excited that the deep physical and emotional healing enabled by the practice of yoga is at last being recognised, accepted, and valued by the psychological fraternity, and that people with a history of trauma now have the possibility to reclaim their bodies and “to live in the present, without feeling or behaving according to irrelevant demands belonging to the past” (Bessel van der Kolk), through the practice of Trauma Sensitive Yoga.
Shirley Hicks is a practising somatic psychotherapist and yoga teacher, with a private clinic based in the Gold Coast at Varsity Lakes. Shirley has a real interest in how the body carries unresolved life events and how through “talk therapies” the body is often missed. With over 27 years clinical experience she has refined the way in which she supports clients to involve their body in the healing process, drawing on the work of Judith Herman, Babette Rothschild, Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk . Her work is also influenced by Ron Kurtz and Hakomi.
